Terms and Conditions

These terms cover guitar lessons provided by Matthew Annable, trading as Matthew Annable Music (“I”, “me”, “my”), to you as a student, or to a student you're booking for if they're under 18 (“you”, “your”).

Please have a read before booking. By booking a lesson you're agreeing to these terms.

1. Who I am and how to reach me

2. What I provide

One-to-one guitar tuition, delivered online by video call, or in person where I have availability. Lessons are 30, 40 or 60 minutes long.

I'll always do my best to teach well and to help you make progress, but I can't guarantee any particular rate of improvement, exam result or outcome — that depends a great deal on your own practice and on things neither of us controls.

3. Booking and payment

Lessons are booked through my website, or by arrangement with me directly.
Payment is taken at the time of booking, by card. Card payments are handled by Stripe — I never see or store your card details. If you'd rather pay another way, get in touch and we'll sort something out.
If payment isn't completed within four hours of a booking being made, the slot is released and the booking is cancelled automatically.
Lessons can be booked up to 30 days ahead, and must be booked at least 18 hours before the lesson start time.
Your lesson slot is confirmed once payment is received, and you'll get a confirmation email with the details.

In-person lessons, where available, cost the same as online lessons.

I'll give you at least one month's notice in writing before any price increase. Any lessons you've already paid for are unaffected.

5. Your first lesson

Your first online lesson is free, and there's no obligation to book anything afterwards. It's a normal 40-minute lesson — the only difference is that there's nothing to pay.

The free trial applies to online lessons only. In-person lessons are paid from the first lesson.

I offer one free lesson per student. The booking system checks this against your email address when you book.

6. Rescheduling, cancellations and missed lessons

I've tried to make this as fair as I can in both directions. In short: tell me in advance and I'll do my best; leave it to the last minute and I can't fill the slot.

If you need to rearrange

Let me know as far in advance as you can. If I have another slot free that suits you, I'll move your lesson at no extra cost. I usually can, but I can't guarantee it — it depends on my availability that week.

If you cancel or don't attend

A lesson cancelled more than 24 hours before its start time can be rescheduled if I have a suitable slot, as above.
A lesson cancelled within 24 hours of its start time, or one you don't attend, is payable in full and can't be refunded or rescheduled.
If you're running late, please still join — I'll teach for whatever time is left, but I can't run over into the next lesson.

The reason for the 24-hour rule is simply that a slot cancelled at short notice can't be offered to anyone else.

A free trial lesson works slightly differently, because there is nothing to charge. If you cancel it more than 24 hours ahead, we can rearrange it and your free lesson still stands. If you miss it, or cancel it within 24 hours, the free lesson has been used — any lesson after that is a paid one. There is never anything to pay for a missed trial.

If I need to cancel

If I have to cancel a lesson, I'll rearrange it for another date that works for you. If we genuinely can't find one, you'll get a full refund of that lesson, or I'll credit it against a future lesson — whichever you'd prefer.

Holidays and breaks

I'll give you as much notice as I can of any breaks in my teaching schedule. You don't pay for lessons during those periods.

If you'd like to pause or stop lessons altogether, please give me two weeks' notice where you can, so I have a chance to offer your slot to someone else. There's no minimum commitment and no joining fee — you're never tied in.

7. Your legal right to cancel

Because you're buying a service at a distance, UK consumer law gives you 14 days from the day you book in which you may cancel and get a refund, without giving a reason.

There's an important exception, and it's the normal one for lessons. If you ask for lessons to begin within that 14-day period — which most people do, since they've usually booked a lesson for the coming week — then:

once a lesson has been taught, it's been fully performed, and that lesson is no longer refundable; and
if you cancel partway through the 14 days, you'll pay for any lessons already taught and be refunded for any you haven't had.

By booking a lesson that falls within 14 days of your booking, you're asking me to start providing the service straight away and acknowledging the above.

To cancel under this right, just email me. You don't need a special form.

This right sits alongside section 6 and doesn't take anything away from it. Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights.

8. If you're booking for someone under 18

If the student is under 18, the lessons are contracted with you as the parent or guardian, and you're responsible for payment and for these terms.

I'm enhanced DBS checked.
For online lessons with an under-18, I'd recommend that a parent or guardian is at home and contactable for the duration of the lesson.
Please make sure your child is set up somewhere in the house where you're comfortable with them having a video call — a family room rather than a bedroom is usually best.
I'll always keep you informed about progress, and you're welcome to sit in on any lesson.

9. Recording lessons

I record my lessons, and here's exactly what that means and why.

A transcript of the lesson is produced and used to write the written summary I send you afterwards.
Short video clips of me demonstrating something are saved and linked into your summary, and filed into your own cloud folder so you can go back to them.
Recordings are stored securely and are not shared with anyone else, published, or used for anything other than supporting your lessons.

If you'd rather I didn't record your lessons, just tell me — either before we start or at any point afterwards — and I'll stop. You'll still get a written summary; it'll just be written from my notes instead.

For students under 18, I'll ask a parent or guardian to confirm they're happy with this before we begin.

Please don't record lessons yourself without asking me first.

10. Your lesson materials

Sheet music, arrangements, backing tracks, worksheets and video clips I provide are for your own personal practice.
Please don't share, resell or publish them.
Some of the music I teach from is published material and is subject to the publisher's own copyright — the same rules apply as to any book you'd buy.
My own arrangements and recordings remain mine, and you're very welcome to use them for as long as you're learning.
Your cloud folder stays available to you while you're having lessons. If you stop, I'll keep it for 24 months in case you come back, and you can ask me to send you the contents or delete it at any time.

11. Equipment and connection

For online lessons you'll need a device that runs Zoom, a reasonable internet connection, and a camera position where I can see you and your guitar. The requirements are set out on my website.

If a lesson can't go ahead because of a problem at my end — my internet, my equipment — I'll rearrange or refund it. If the problem is at your end, I'll do everything I can to help and I'll always be reasonable about it, but I can't generally refund a lesson I was ready and available to teach.

12. Behaviour, and ending lessons

I want lessons to be a comfortable and encouraging place for everyone. I reserve the right to end a lesson, or to stop teaching a student, if there's abusive or threatening behaviour. In that situation any lessons already paid for and not yet taught will be refunded.

You can stop having lessons at any time — just let me know.

13. If something goes wrong

Please tell me. Most things are sorted out with a conversation, and I'd much rather hear about a problem than have you quietly disappear. Email me and I'll come back to you within five working days.

14. Liability

I'll provide lessons with reasonable care and skill, as the law requires.

I'm not liable for losses that weren't foreseeable, or for anything arising from your failure to follow reasonable guidance. Nothing in these terms limits my liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that can't be limited by law.

Playing the guitar is a physical activity. If you have any injury, condition or discomfort that might be affected by playing, please tell me so I can teach around it, and take medical advice where appropriate.

15. Changes to these terms

I may update these terms from time to time. If I do, I'll let existing students know by email, and the version that applies to a lesson is the one that was published when you booked it.

16. Law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you live elsewhere in the UK you can also bring proceedings in your own country's courts.
